Bali and Technorati
We have been experimenting with feeds… a dip into Technorati’s blog ocean, a search on ‘Bali’, brought up several interesting tidbits such as the following…
“Life is never boring in Indo… Even just hanging around Kuta the ‘safe’ town in Bali that’s the base for more exotic missions and the place you return to for some good old fashioned civilisation when you’ve been on a feral mission somewhere else can be full of pitfalls. Literally. Want to know what it’s like to fall into an open sewer? Kuta is the place. No red tape and warning signs around broken paving stones there, just a big hole, fine in the daytime when you can see it… lethal when you are pissed up on cheap booze at night and the street lights aren’t working. Equally the dogs- look nasty and rabid during the day, at night to your drunk ass they are cute puppies that need stroking… still rabid though. Want to know what it’s like getting chased by a gang of men with machetes? Then be a drunk asshole in Kuta. No matter who you are, how clean living and decent your character you will get pulled into the Kuta vortex. I was travelling there with the editor of one of the Brits magazines twelve years ago (an upright sober fellow if there ever was one) and after a particularly messy night I lost him for three days. No idea where he’d got to. I saw Mole on the third morning and he’d thought he’d seen him ‘looking confused’ on the other side of the island. Turns out he had. Weird things happen over there. On the way back from G-Land I saw an overturned coach in a ditch with bleeding injured people hanging out of smashed windows, our driver wouldn’t stop so we could help, I asked if the ambulances would be there soon, he replied there were no ambulances… Life is cheap there, that’s what happens when you firmly believe in reincarnation.” From… http://surfphoto.co.uk/
Kasi’s hat is off to RSSDoodle and The Lessnau Lounge for this plug-in. We will have a post once every week with bits from Technorati!

Listen!
Some examples of gamelan music. The two videos on left are typical. Here are some tunes from Colin McPhee. No video accompanying this music.

Bali Circa 1936
This is amazing footage from Bali circa 1936; though the title ‘Bali- Paradise Isle 1939’ indicates otherwise, the copyright date on the film itself is 1936. The description that accompanies the film on YouTube describes the film as ‘A tour of Bali and its religious traditions in 1936’ and this isn’t inaccurate but it fails to do justice to the entirety of the film.
You see the natives going about daily tasks, traveling to and from the market, the throngs of people there, a procession of ducks, preliminaries to a cock fight, religious observances, feeding the monkeys, even an example of the Legong dance is part of this little documentary.
There is no background music though reference is made in the subtitles to ‘the weird music of the gamelan’. A great many of the natives in this film, men and women alike, are bare breasted. But at the end you have an idea of daily life in Bali at that time and place in history.
Really it is nothing short of fascinating! Kasi recommends to the ‘aficionado’ for historical perspective and to curiosity seekers for their curiosity and to other surfers for a window to a different time and place.

A Note About Webcams in Bali
This site has been under some evolutionary pressure; we have changed servers and looks and will be changing yet again in the near future. Kasi’s nature is chameleon. But we will still be about all things Bali!
This post is the first in a long while. We are still receiving visitors from all over the world! Kasi extends her welcome to everyone stopping by for information, curiosity, or other mundane reason, but especially to those led by fascination or desire to explore.
A note about web cams. Live webcams from Bali are hard to come by… Outside of Poppies restaurant the pickings are slim. The only other one of note at the time of this writing you can see here or from the link on Kasi .
A little bit of searching reveals there may have been a couple more at one time- here is a summary of what might have been up at one time. And here is a summary of webcams nearby, including other parts of Indonesia… Have fun!
