UNEP Recommended Sea Rehabilitation

United Nation Institution for environment program or known as UNEP recommended to the countries in the world to conduct rehabilitation effort for the sea ecosystem. This recommendation was delivered in concern with Blue Carbon development concept launched by UNEP. The Blue Carbon concept itself could prove the role of sea ecosystem and coastal area that filled with mangrove forest, sea grass and coral reef in absorbing the carbon. Due to the heavy damage suffered by mangrove forest, sea grass and coral reef around the world, this effort is needed in order to fight against climate change. The Publishing of Ngurah Rai Airport Book of Journey

Ngurah Rai Airport launched a 130 pages book which is about its 70 years journey as a Bali’s prideful airport. The book which could give thorough explanation about Bali, firstly was hard to make since the lots of literature material regarding airport first establishment hard to be found. Still the spirit to realize the book still keep high those make a book about an airport that has already serve million visitors per year could be published for around 1.000 copies. Water Board Need to Form Immediately in Bali

Bali provincial government need to form immediately Lembaga Komisi Irigasi (Komir) – irrigation commission institution – and Dewan Sumberdaya air (Dewan Air) – water board – to protect the system of irrigation organization and traditional farming (subak) from outside intervention who also needs water.

Professor of Agriculture Faculty Udayana University, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Windia, M.S., said that Institution of Irrigation Commission and Water Resource Board is part of Bill No. 7 years 2004 concerning water resource.

He said, through forming those two new institutions, subak would not has any connection with the outside parties anymore especially in term of water irrigation problem who had already utilized by the farmers since a long time ago. “That irrigation water hoped could utilized continuously and not like what happened nowadays where lots of irrigation waters by some companies become water in package instead for irrigation,” said Windia in Denpasar on Sunday (February 28).

Water dedicated for the farmer utilized by some parties for business interest outside agriculture ground. Subak has no ability in facing that numerous problems.

“This make subak unable to face with outsides pressures causing the farmer land dried and give no result at all,” he said. Windia also added that if komir and water board has been formed would make them could deals completely with the outsiders who want to utilize the irrigation water.

That is why Bali Provincial Government as well as Regency and City Government in each of their area hopes to encourage the formation of two new institutions who could nurturing and protecting subak. This is very important considering subak as part of Bali’s art and cultural life.

Saraswati:The Day for Knowledge

Today, Saturday, Balinese celebrates the Saraswati holyday, a sacred day for knowledge. Saraswati is the Goddess of Knowledge, symbolized by a beautiful woman with four hands, riding on a white swan, she symbolize that knowledge is like a beautiful woman, chase by everyone for the rest of his life. Her four hands hold, respectively, a palm leaf manuscript, a lontar, a Balinese traditional manuscript which is the source of science or knowledge; a genitri, a chain consist with 108 pieces, symbolizing that knowledge has no ending there will always be a knowledge, knowledge is never run out; and a guitar or wina, a musical instrument, it symbolizes that science is as beauty as the sound of wina and a lotus is a symbol of holiness. The swans symbolize prudence, with knowledge human can distinguish between good and evil.

The goddess Saraswati is one of the most revered and popular goddess in Bali. Her statue can be found in every junior and senior high school all over Bali, her gigantic statue can be found in every university in Bali.

The celebration Saraswati holyday is begin today, Friday. This is the day of preparation (pangeredanan). All the books and lontar are collected together, cleaned, dusted, and pilled in the family temples or school temples. Every school and school temples in Bali is decorated lavishly, offices are also decorated the shrines that is usually located on the northeast corner of the offices complex.

Saraswati day is celebrated by presenting offering to the books and lontars that is already pilled in the family temples or school temples. The students celebrate the Saraswati holyday at school, and the office-workers in their office.

The celebration of Saraswati holyday must be conducted in the morning until noon. No celebration is held after 12 M. it is believed that the goddess Saraswati returns to heaven after 12 M and will not receive any homage and offering. In the afternoon of Saraswati day, Balinese are not permitted to read or write the book, since it is special day for all the books and lontars when all of them is given offering. In the evening, Balinese will read holy books in their houses or in the temple.
